Thangkas are a form of Tibetan art that began in the 11th century. These paintings are usually done by monks and often depict deities of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Thangka artists use very small brushes and naturally generated colors to create these works of art. Their training takes many years and they typically do not sign their work. This particular Chenrezig thangka is a remarkable example of thangka painting. It is complex and incorporates esoteric information in its many images. The artist who painted this thangka was well educated in tantric practices. Chenrezig (Tibetan) or Avaloketishvara (Sanskrit) is the Buddha of compassion. His Holiness, the Dalai Lama is considered to be an emanation of the field of consciousness depicted in the thangka.
