In Tibetan, “Bardo” literally means “in between.” In these teachings, Bardo refers to the time period in between life and death, or death and the next rebirth. Teachings on the Bardo are found throughout the Yungdrung Bön scriptures. However, a chapter within the Mother Tantra is dedicated to detailed information and advice regarding the Bardo. If one practices these teachings during life, then one experiences less fear during the moment of death. Additionally, by recognizing the true nature of these experiences, one has the opportunity to influence the conditions of one’s rebirth, or ultimately, to achieve complete liberation. With this knowledge, one can also be of great support and comfort to others who are dying. Within the Bardo teachings, there is a beautiful prayer that points out to the dying person the true nature of their experiences and leads them towards wisdom. This prayer is commonly called, “The Precious Garland,” and is traditionally sung continuously during the days following a person’s death. Each student will receive a copy of this prayer and be taught the traditional melody.
